Backup USB drive to image file

UsbToolbox can backup USB drive to image file. It will do a sector-by-sector copy. All information in the USB drive, including partition table, hidden files, will be copied to the image file. In intelligent mode, only used sector will be copied, thus the image file size can be decreased significantly. You can browse files in the image file, or restore it to USB drive later.

To copy USB drive to image file, please follow the steps,

  1. Run UsbToolbox, and click the button "Backup USB drive to image file".

  2. UsbToolbox shows the page for backuping USB drive to image file.

    Select the correct USB drive from the drive list. If the USB drive is not listed, please check the option "List USB hard drives".

    UsbToolbox will list all partitions in the selected drive. Please notice that all partitions in the USB drive will be copied to the image file.

    Click "Browse" button to specify the output file path and name. There are two options for the output file type,

    • UsbToolbox Image file (.xdi): The image file will be stored in compressed format. You can specify a password to protect the image file. You may choose to split the image file to multiple volumes. If intelligent mode is enabled, only used sectors will be copied.
    • Raw disc image file (*.img): All sectors in the drive will be copied. The data are stored in uncompressed format, and the output file size is the same with the drive size.



    Click "Customize" button to set advanced features if the output file type is set to "UsbToolbox image file".


  3. Click "Start" button to start copying USB drive to the specified image file.

    UsbToolbox will show the detailed progress message during the process. You can abort the operation by hitting Exit button at anytime.

  4. You should get the message "Copy completed successfully." on complete if no error occurs.
